Yesterday was a Sunday that was a beautiful cool and cloudy winter day at the Free Farm Stand, with the sun poking out once in a while. It was one of those seasonal days where we didn't have a ton of produce (like the week before) and the most we are getting from our gardens are greens, a little broccoli, and some lettuce. I was able to pick a few more rocoto peppers (they are our winter heroes, like our white sapotes, lemons, greens, and chayotes, though our chayote plants haven't stepped up to the plate yet). It was a skimpy day produce wise and we had a huge crowd. Though we ran out of produce early we did seem to give everyone some good stuff. The thing I felt most positive about is that now the Free Farm Stand has a Free Farm. So it feels like we are doing the best we can to grow our own food and to encourage others to do the same and to share the surplus.
Fruit gleaning is going ahead and Stanford Glean and Page brought by approximately 20lbs of citrus from students who gleaned the trees at Stanford and the fruit that he picked from Holy Innocents. I got some lemons from our neighbor's tree. Lyn grew some more of her wonderful black lentil sprouts. We got a bag full of greens from some kids gardens connected to Urban Sprouts. Treat Commons contributed about two pounds of greens and the majority of greens came from 18th and Rhode Island. Right towards the end when we ran out of most everything, Clara brought by some greens from the Secret Garden.
The Free Farm Stand happens on Sundays 1-3pm in Treat Commons Community Garden located at Parque Niños Unidos at the corner of 23rd St. and Treat Ave.

Here are two more opportunities to help plant a new garden possibly in your neighborhood: Allison is looking for help with some space she has to garden near 11th St. in the SOMA neighborhood. Her email is allison.gerley@gmail.com Here is something Samantha sent me: Aloha,
If you are reading this message right now than I consider it a GREAT privilege and blessing to know you and to have you as a person in my life! And I also have a hunch that you are a green thumb goddess or something more masculine of that sort :)...
I am hoping any of you might want to help me in this design of my backyard, any tips, organizational suggestions, or hands are welcome and appreciated... New terrain for me, but hoping to make it beautiful with the help of some of you...
I am free on fridays and weekends to play... i prefer mornings on the weekends to work outside and play at night, but let me know when a day that may work for you to come have a little friendly garden day... snacks provided, shared, and bringing friends encouraged always. The space has much potential, i think, and hoping to make it into a place where a lot of people can enjoy it..
The space is about 20x20, i would estimate and is just up a few blocks from 19th ave and Holloway.. Would love some help in creating this vision!
Let me know friends,
Blessings,
Samantha sammycurl@gmail.com

Free Farm Stand Goals and What we do
We strive to attain the following goals:
•help make locally grown, fresh and nutritious organic produce accessible to all, especially those families and individuals on low-incomes and tight budgets.
•help empower people who have the space to grow their own food and become more self-reliant.
•promote good nutrition and health
What we do:
•We grow as much food as can in our Mission neighborhood and distribute it for free at our Sunday Free Farm Stand.
•We offer garden advice and help to those who want to put in a backyard garden.
•We grow seedlings and starts to give away and other plants.
•We offer a place where neighbors can come and share their extra produce that they have grown with others.
•We provide a drop-offplace for local organic surplus food from both local gardeners and organic farmers.
•We offer a weekly gathering spot where neighbors can get to know each other and share their diverse cultures and traditions.
•We harvest organic fruit from backyard fruit trees and public spaces give away it away at the Free Farm Stand.
•We give away honey from local bee keepers and educate neighbors about bees and gentle beekeeping.
•We are working with the San Francisco Permaculture Guild on a number of food growing projects to turn a vacant lot on Potrero Hill into a Permaculture mini-farm that will grow food that will go to the Free FarmStand and other groups that distribute food to the hungry.
